The Shadow Society is a living mystery school for witches who are ready to train, experiment, and go further.

We don’t spend years studying the mysteries from books. We work with the gods. We undergo initiation. We walk through the gates now and find out what waits for us on the other side.

Hundreds of witches are practicing together, working the same mysteries, comparing what we find, and pushing our practice further each month.

Every October, the door opens again.

There’s a reason so many of us get a little obsessed with October.

It’s not just that we like Halloween. There’s this gnawing feeling that there must be something more here. That maybe the stories about witches and spirits and gods and the dead weren’t only stories. That there are things we’ve forgotten how to see.

And every October, that feeling gets louder.

So this year, we’re following it.

Hundreds of us are going into the dark together. We’ll approach the old gods, ask to be let through, cross the rivers into the realm of the dead, and make the journey witches have made for thousands of years: down into the places where our power has always lived.

The witch‘s power is found in the dark.

There’s a reason the witch has always been associated with darkness.

She is willing to go where other people won’t.

Because hidden down in the dark, in the realm of the dead, lies the shadow. And within the shadow are the parts of ourselves we have lost access to: our anger, our ambition, our courage, our instincts, and the power to express them fully.

The witch goes down to get them back.

And perhaps that is part of why she has always been feared. She has gone into the dark and returned with access to more of herself, and more of her power.

That is the mystery at the heart of our work this October.

We’ll each choose an Underworld deity to guide us as we prepare for our own descent and initiation into the Underworld.

This October, we cross the gates into the realm of the dead and discover what the dark has been holding for us.

Learn the practices of graveyard magick with Toni Coe, then head into the cemetery yourself for a week of fieldwork: working with the spirits of the cemetery, leaving offerings, and putting what you’ve learned into practice among the dead.

THE ROLL OF THE DEAD | Throughout October
Add the names of your dead to our communal Roll of the Dead. Throughout October, hundreds of names will gather there as we carry our dead with us through the Underworld Mysteries.

WITCH’S NIGHT | Live October 29th
Bring your tea or midnight margaritas and your witch hat. We’ll tell ghost stories and strange tales, divine together, bless the hundreds of names gathered on our Roll of the Dead, and end the night with a toast to the dead before Halloween.

AND OCTOBER IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.

Every Mystery takes us somewhere new.

As students of the Craft, we go deeper into the spiral of ourselves, accessing different pieces of our own power as we go.

And month after month, we become more capable witches. We gain greater access to our own magical power. Our practical spellwork gets better. We train the witch’s sight, learning to perceive more and trust what we see.

And there is always further to go.

Each Mystery gives us another way into the Craft and another chance to push beyond what we could do before. The deeper we go, the more powerful our Craft becomes.

This October begins our descent into the Underworld, and an entire dark season of Mysteries stretches out ahead of us. In November, we turn toward the Ancestors. December brings us into Yule, and in the depths of winter, we enter the mysteries of the Crones.

October is the descent. And from there, we keep going deeper.

I WANT TO SEE HOW GOOD WE CAN GET.

There are more of us practicing witchcraft now than there have been in a very long time. More people are returning to the old gods, learning divination, listening to their dreams, working with spirits and the dead, and taking seriously experiences that the ordinary world has taught us to dismiss.

So how far can we take it?

What happens when hundreds of witches spend a month working with a god? What happens when we train divination until we trust what we see, or practice trance until we can actually go somewhere? What happens when we undergo initiation instead of only reading about how people once did it, and go deeper into the spiral to access our power?

There is so much knowledge being recovered, practiced, and created right now.

MEET THE FACULTY

The Shadow Society is taught and tended by a small resident faculty, with visiting practitioners joining us throughout the year to teach from their own areas of the Craft.

Founder & Lead Instructor

Alex is the founder of Tea & Rosemary and the witch behind the Shadow Society. Her practice has always been driven by curiosity: what happens when we actually try the old rituals, approach the gods, follow the strange experiences, and see where they lead? She created the Shadow Society to gather witches willing to find out.

Brittany

Lead Facilitator

Although Brittany started her journey on the crooked path a few years ago, she has always been drawn to the Shadow – especially when it uses folklore, legend, and myth to illuminate what we have buried and forgotten.  She found community in the Society one Yuletide season and ever since has loved trading experiences, practices, gnosis, and personal stories with other Society members from around the globe.  Although her personal practice focuses on Celtic mythology and folk magic, the Society has given her a chance to explore broader deity work and hone her craft.

I’m a language teacher and herbalist by trade, seeing patients and reading natal charts. I’ve walked the Wiccan path for seven years, but my curiosity doesn’t stop there—I love delving into other traditions, always looking for the threads that connect them.

Visiting Instructor

Every few months, a visiting instructor joins the Society for a special live class, bringing their own corner of the craft into our practice. It’s a chance to learn directly from witches with unusual specialties, explore practices we might not otherwise encounter, and add entirely new forms of witchcraft to our repertoire.

Step beyond the cemetery gates and into the practical world of graveyard magick. Death witch and ceremonialist Toni Coe will explore the graveyard as a threshold between the living and the dead, from the folklore and magical history of burial grounds to the realities of practicing within them.

We’ll explore graveyard etiquette, offerings and reciprocity, communicating with the dead, working respectfully with grave dirt, and ways to bring graveyard magick into your own practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Shadow Society isn’t an old occult school where you spend years studying before you’re allowed anywhere near the mysteries. If something here is calling to you, you can begin.

You don’t need to know how to work with a deity before you approach one, or master trance before you enter it. We’ll give you what you need, and then we’ll do the work. You’ll undergo the initiation, attempt the practice, compare what happened with hundreds of other witches, and get better by actually practicing witchcraft.

We’re not waiting until we know enough to begin. We’re beginning now.

Most of our live gatherings take place on weekday evenings, usually between 6–8 PM Eastern, although times occasionally vary depending on the event or visiting instructor. All live gatherings are recorded and added to the Society afterward.

Most students can follow the core Mystery in around 1–2 hours a week. Each month also includes optional enrichment, like Practice Hall, visiting instructors, and additional practices, for students who have more time or want to go deeper.

That’s completely fine. You don’t need any previous experience working with deities.

For the Underworld Mysteries, you’ll be guided through choosing the deity who will act as your gatekeeper for the month, researching them, and beginning that relationship before the Initiation.

You’ll have guidance throughout the process, so you won’t be expected to figure it all out on your own.

You’ll get immediate access to The Shadow Society and everything you need for October’s Underworld Mysteries.

We’ll spend the first week with the core content and choosing our deities to initiate with. You can start with the October teaching, choose your Underworld deity, and begin preparing for the Initiation alongside the rest of the Society.

You’ll also have access to the Society forum, where you can ask questions, share what you’re working through, and follow along with everyone else throughout the month.

No. You don’t need to do everything to be part of the Mystery.

Each month has a Core Path that takes you through the Mystery from beginning to end. Start there. Then, if you have the time and want to go deeper, you can add the additional practices and live gatherings throughout the month.

You can have a full experience of each Mystery without doing every single thing inside The Shadow Society.
