Imbolc falls on February 1st, right at the midpoin Imbolc falls on February 1st, right at the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Winter isn’t over, but something is shifting, and the days are getting noticeably longer.

In the old Irish tradition, this is when Brigid walks the land. She’s the goddess of the hearth fire, of poetry, of smithcraft. All of these involve taking raw material and transforming it into something else. Her element is fire, which is why candles show up in almost every Imbolc tradition. The older name for this holiday, Candlemas, comes from the practice of blessing all the candles you’d use for the coming year.

The word Imbolc itself likely comes from “i mbolg,” meaning “in the belly,” referring to pregnant ewes and the first milk of the season. Life that’s forming but hasn’t yet arrived. I think this is why so many people feel a creative restlessness around this time of year. We want to make things, start things, but we’re still in the dreaming phase. The soil is too cold to plant in, and yet that’s actually the point. Imbolc honors the quickening, the part where something is taking shape inside you before you have words for it.

I always pay attention to where I feel stuck around Imbolc, because Brigid has a way of illuminating what’s blocking the path forward.

For those who feel called, I’m doing a group road opener ritual on February 15th. This is for those who have been feeling like something is standing between you and where you want to go. I have 11 spots and I’ll do the work on your behalf. Comment OPEN to join.

🐍 The crooked path isn’t about spells or rituals o 🐍 The crooked path isn’t about spells or rituals or deities. It’s the path into the crooked parts of yourself - the ones you hid, the ones that made people nervous, the ones that hold everything you’ve been looking for.

In the Shadow Society, we walk this path together. In January, we begin the Crone Mysteries with the Cailleach, Baba Yaga, and Hecate.

Enrollment closes January 7th. Comment SHADOW and I’ll send you the details.

This is mystery school training for practitioners of the crooked path. Each month, we descend together into a different mystery — shadow work, deity partnerships, underworld journeys, ancestral healing, ritual magic.

In January, we begin the Crone Mysteries with Cailleach, Baba Yaga, and Hecate as guides through winter's initiations.

You don't need a full ritual to honor it. Some of the oldest traditions are small — opening doors, lighting candles, leaving offerings for the land.

These are a few of my favorites, rooted in folklore and easy to do at home.

The 12 nights of Yule begin on December 20th. I'm running a free journey through them with the folklore behind each night and a daily ritual to practice. Comment YULE and I'll send you the link. 🌙
